Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
Surendra Sahani, a 50-year-old resident of Barabazar in Chuchura, Hooghly, drowned in the Ganga River on Friday morning. He had gone to bathe at the old launch ghat after completing his regular morning run. Eyewitnesses reported that he entered the water and immediately slipped into a deeper section, after which he did not return.
Following the incident, Chuchura MLA Asit Majumdar and Trinamool leader Tapan Dasgupta reached the spot. The local police and disaster management team were called, and a search operation was launched near the ghat. As of the latest update, efforts to recover the body were ongoing.
Tapan Dasgupta stated that Surendra Sahani had previously saved several people from drowning in the same river. He said, “Today perhaps he felt dizzy or unwell during his bath and drowned.” MLA Asit Majumdar said, “The one who saved others from the Ganga has himself drowned — maybe it was destiny.”
